Santarem is the place, here you have purchased the most (large metropolis, where there are stores of all kinds).
Alter do Chao is also a small town to buy some stuff in, but is slightly more expensive than Santarem normally.

Stay up to 90 days without a Visa will be automatically approved. When applying for a 3-month extension it is granted at the Policia federal and usually goes very smoothly. There are several ways to get there.
Common cities you're travelling to are Sao Paolo, Rio de janeiro, Belem, Santarem and otherwise inland flight to Santarem as the last destination. Santarem is a major port city with 300 000 inhabitants.
If you live in Norway the most common way is Oslo – Lisbon (approximately 4-hour flight) with 1 night's accommodation in Lisbon, Lisbon – Belem approximately 7-hour flight and sometimes accommodation 1 night before domestic travel to Santarem airport.
From Santarem airport is perpendicular to travel to Santarem (20 min by taxi) and take a riverboat to the site or 30 min taxi ride to the smaller river city called Alter do Chao and boat from and to the site (about 1 – 1.5-hour boat ride).
