Only a 1.5-hour boat ride from Alter do Chão
Alter do Chão is just a short boat ride away, making the journey between full civilization and complete peace and quiet very short. The image above is from Ilha do Amor (Love Island) in Alter do Chão, which has been named Brazil’s most beautiful beach multiple times.
Alter do Chão is a well-known tourist destination in the Rio Tapajós bay, featuring what is considered one of Brazil’s five most beautiful beaches. The town is beautifully nestled beneath two rolling green hills. Its name comes from one of the hills, which is shaped like an altar. The town is located 33 km west of Santarém and has affordable transport options.
But Alter do Chão is much more than just a beach town. The lagoon it faces (Lago Verde) is home to countless animals and can be explored by canoe or stand-up paddleboard. It is also the starting point for fantastic boat trips to nearby forest reserves and isolated communities, and it boasts one of the finest indigenous populations in the Amazon.
Santarém
By riverboat, which costs only 30 reais (about 70 Norwegian kroner), you can also travel to Santarém, the city with 300,000 inhabitants, to buy supplies. The trip takes 4 hours. Bring your hammock and relax while traveling with the locals along the banks of the Rio Arapiuns to and from the area for a very low cost, and bring back whatever you need.
All you need to do is wave a white flag or use your arms to signal when you want the boat to come ashore. The boat passes by our area several times a week. Alternatively, you can arrange pick-up days and times with our transport partners. If several people share the transport cost, it becomes very affordable per person.
Both Santarém and Alter do Chão provide easy access to Floresta Nacional (FLONA), Tapajós, and other jungle and river areas, offering wonderful hiking, canoeing, wildlife experiences, and visits to local communities. This area is also rich in history.
